Hi Everybody,

It's not getting any cooler, and its fire season. Well, I know the cooler weather is just around the corner, so just hang in there for a few more weeks. In three months we'll be longing for the warmer weather.

If you want to play golf when it's cooler, sign up for our 6th Annual Rancho Sierra Glowball tournament, which will be held Saturday, September 5th, starting at 4 PM. This is always a great event, with good food and a fun atmosphere. And if you've never played golf in the dark with glowballs, it's an experience not to be missed.

We play nine holes just before dark. Then we have a BBQ cookout.  Finally we don glow necklaces, get our glowballs and glowsticks, and head out for some night golf. We walk these nine holes.

The tournament is played in a scramble format in teams of four. Each player hits a tee shot. Then the teams decides who has the best shot. Everyone hits their next shot from the location of the best ball.

If you would like to learn more about it, click here or call the course at 661-946-1080. You can also sign up online here.  This is a very popular event, so sign up soon.

Shirley's Corner - News From the Clubhouse

Note: This month Shirley's corner is written by Tracy Yates.

Well, here we are half way through summer already. Up to a week ago, it was a fairly mild one, so far, with temperatures in the upper 90’s for the most part. Even with the current higher temperatures, the course is green and looking great. Again we can thank our outside crew - Rick, Pedro, and Cody - for all their hard work. There really hasn’t been much wind either the past month, wow!! How many of our Antelope Valley golfers know how to play without the wind? I know of only a few and challenge you all [Owners Note: I guess Tracy is a good wind player!].

We are “crazy busy” early mornings and late afternoons out here, but with the higher temps and lack of breeze during the middle of the day it tends to be a bit quiet. So to get some of you out here when it is quiet we are running a special (another challenge). Through September we are offering 2 for 1 on our green fees between the hours of 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. It doesn’t get any better than that, and we hope to see you then! We'll keep the water cold for you!

Merchandise, we have it!! We have just re-stocked gloves and balls. We have new hats and putters on the way. We have a great deal on Cleveland bags, pull carts, clubs, shirts, etc…. Don’t be afraid to take advantage of our great prices (and our air conditioning) inside the clubhouse!! Also, if you have requests for particular merchandise please let us know. We are more than willing to find, and carry, what you need to have a great game and a great time.

One last note….. Glowball! Glowball! Glowball! It’s that time again, our 6th Annual glowball tournament will be held Saturday September 5th. For those of you who have played before, I know we will see you then. For those of you who haven’t, you have got to come out to see and enjoy this!!! Details are online and at the clubhouse. You don’t want to miss it. Please sign up quickly though, unfortunately we have to limit the number of people out there.

Tips from The Pro - The Mental Aspect of Sports

Even though Tiger Woods has been having a rough patch of late, he still exudes what it takes to be on top of the competition mentally and emotionally.  Here is something that I believe suits the rest of us.

If you've ever had the chance to experience the zone in some sport, then you know it is a state of mind in which there is absolutely no fear and you act and react instinctively. You don't weigh alternatives or consider consequences or second guess yourself. You are in the moment and "just doing it." Whatever you do turns out to be exactly what needed to be done.

Most athletes never get to this level because they never get past the fear of making a mistake. Athletes who reach the point where there is absolutely no fear of the consequences of screwing up will usually, and quite spontaneously enter "the zone." By the way, a psychological zone is not a condition you can will yourself into, the way you can will yourself into a feat of endurance. It is a state of mind you find yourself in that is inherently creative, and usually if you start thinking about your actions at a rational or conscious level, you pop right out of it.

Even though you cannot force or will yourself into a zone, you can set up the kind of mental conditions that are most conducive to experiencing "the zone," by developing a positive winning attitude. I define a positive winning attitude as expecting a positive result from you efforts, with an acceptance that whatever results you get are a perfect reflection of your level of development and what you need to learn to do better.

That's what great athletes have: a winning attitude that allows them to easily move beyond their mistakes and keep going.

Keep those positive thoughts flow and have fun, and you will play great golf!

Superintendent's Corner

It's hot these days and Rick, Pedro, and Cody are doing a great job keeping the course green and the grass cut to a nice level. Rick also found time to repair the driving range netting.

In late September or early October, it will be time again to punch the greens. We'll give you plenty of notice, but please feel free to call the clubhouse at 661-946-1080 or send email to taiken@ranchosierragolf.com if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

Good News and Sad News

We're all very grateful that Bob Pfund is on the road to recovery from his stroke and that Shirley is back at the golf course helping everyone out. We wish Bob a continued speedy recovery. Thanks to everyone that is helping out Shirley and Bob during this challenging time for them.

On a sad note, Bob Gonzales' wife passed away this month. Bob is instrumental in running the Men's Club as well as providing a large part of these newsletters. Please lend your support to Bob and his family during this time.

We hope to see you out at Rancho Sierra soon!
